  • The starting rate of 65% for this position is equivalent to $22.61. The wage progression scale is as follows: Year 1=65%>Year 2=70%>Year 3=75%>Year 4=80%>Year 5=92%>Year 6=100%. The full rate of pay is $34.79/hour.
    An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who has one of the following:

    Due to the competitive nature of the selection process, not all qualified candidates who meet the minimum requirements for the position are guaranteed an interview. To be selected for a position, one must meet the following criteria: (1) satisfy the minimum requirements listed in the job posting, (2) if applicable, successfully pass a written and practical exam, (3) satisfy a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), and (4) pass a verbal interview. Metro-North may also require the applicant to undergo a physical ability test, and, if the Company extends a conditional offer, may require him or her to undergo a medical examination, which may include toxicological testing. Failure to pass any step within the hiring process will result in the disqualification of your application.
    Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.

    Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4: 30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends. This program is designed to improve Metro-North's ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change.

Wiremen install, repair and maintain all phases of industrial, commercial and residential electrical work such as; wiring, lighting, motors and associated controls, heating, security systems, information systems and conduit installation.
Bend and install conduit; install, repair and maintain electrical apparatus, fixtures, devices, appliances, electrical signs or electrical equipment generating or utilizing electrical energy and other related electrical duties as assigned under the direction of the Foreman and General Foreman.
Minimum of a High School Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).
Minimum of three (3) years electrical work experience. Vocational or apprentice training may be considered in lieu of experience.
Must be able to comprehend the NYC Electrical Code.
Familiarity with the National Electrical Code.
Rate of Pay
This salary is non-negotiable, based on the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement.
a) Has completed a four-year, bona fide electrical apprenticeship program, OR
b) Has had four (4) years of full-time practical experience as an electrician, and can provide proof thereof (by means of a card or certificate), OR
c) Has graduated from a four-year college or university with a degree in electrical engineering, and has completed two years of bona fide full-time electrical apprenticeship program or has had two years of practical experience as an electrician.
Applicants will establish seniority in the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW), the union representing Wiremen, in accordance with the current collective bargaining agreement.
Members of IBEW are subject to an initiation fee and monthly union dues.
This position is located in Grand Central Terminal. Days, shifts, and hours worked may vary.

Other Information
This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.
This is a safety sensitive position and subject to random toxicological testing.
Must complete Metro-North respirator training and certification within 30 days of job award.
Must provide hand tools appropriate for job.
Must be able to lift and carry tools and material weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally up to 75 pounds.
Color vision required to "read" multi-conductor colored cable using A.I.W. Corp 18 AWG 30/C 1000V cable sample as test standard
Works at heights up to 100 feet on scaffolds, ladders and lifts.
Works with voltages ranging from 12 VDC to 700 VDC and up to 600 VAC
Works within limits of Grand Central Terminal.
