Astellas is announcing a Field Director, MSL Oncology (East Coast based) opening.
Purpose & Scope:
The Field MSL Director is a field based position responsible for: (1) providing leadership and front line management of a team of Medical Science Liaison [MSL] personnel in a given therapeutic area [TA] in support of U.S. Medical Strategies, (2) ensuring their team executes on the functional plans that are developed in the given TA, (3) inspiring others to excel by aligning people behind the SA's vision and motivating them to consistently commit to a standard of excellence and the achievement of superior results, (4) promoting a culture of innovation, constructive challenge, team spirit and accountability within the TA, and (5) translating SA objectives into individual goals for direct reports and helping them define personal development plans and career development opportunities.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
* People Leadership -- Develops a proactive approach to recruitment and staffing and creates initiatives to ensure the retention of strong performers. Attracts, hires, develops, coaches and retains a diverse team. Supports growth and development experiences that prepare individuals for broader responsibilities. Creates and encourages an environment that stresses open, candid, and timely feedback relative to performance. Accomplishes goals within boundaries established by regulatory and legal compliance in accordance with company policies and sound ethical practices. Implements routine field visits with the MSLs to assess performance. Conducts annual and mid year performance reviews with direct reports and participates in talent development. Provides written and verbal feedback to ensure a productive, professional and motivated work group and a highly valued work environment. Ensures compliance to Astellas and ASMA corporate policies, WPIs and business rules. Mentors and assists the National Director MSL in training new Field MSL Directors across TAs.
* Execution of Functional Plans - Leads a regional field based MSL team in given therapeutic area. Ensures the execution of scientific functional plans to support the U.S. MedicalStrategies in the field for assigned TA. Collaborates with field management in therapeutic area to ensure alignment and manage appropriate expectations for MSL field support. Identifies risks and opportunities, leveraging national SA resources to positively impact customer scientific needs. Manages and coordinates TA meetings in collaboration with TA Leadership.
* Strategic Resource Management - Determines MSL geographic location based on KOLs and HCPs in assigned regional TA. Provides input to the National Director MSL in development of the annual budget regarding anticipated project and administrative costs for region/therapeutic area and makes appropriate resource allocation. Provides recommendations to National Director MSL regarding MSL compensation including bonus, PIP points awarded, salary increase, promotions and market adjustments. Anticipates and identifies future training needs within TA and departmentally, and collaborates with National Director MSL and ASMA training department to develop and implement training plan. In collaboration with the ASMA training department, provides input regarding training curriculum.
* Department Support and Development - Participates as an active member of the Scientific Affairs Leadership team with input into strategic process, development of annual corporate and department objectives for therapeutic area covered. Monitors progress on a quarterly basis. Plans and conducts Leadership Team Meetings on a routine basis at TA level. Recommends system and structure enhancements to improve overall organization and department function. At the direction of the National Director MSL, participates as a member of internal corporate committees, including those with company wide scope as needed. Manages departmental projects with regional and National scope to assist the National Director MSL as needed.
Quantitative Dimensions:
Responsible for: Providing people management of 5-10 direct reports (field based MSLs) within a given therapeutic area of expertise. Provides monthly performance feedback and former
performance feedback at midyear and end of year reviews. Provides insights regarding field activity and environmental updates into the monthly business review which is rolled up to President & CEO. Provides leadership to MSLs at major medical congresses. Provides input to TA leadership regarding proposed budget needs to support the science of Astellas products. Manages departmental projects with regional and national scope, as requested. Monitors SAFIRE monthly for compliance to business rules.
Organizational Context:
Associate Director level that reports to National Director MSL within a given therapeutic area. Direct manager to 5-10 Field MSLs in a given therapeutic area. Collaborates with ASMA and APUS Departments such as Human Resources, Compliance, Regulatory, Legal, APGD, Sales, Marketing, Health Systems, Safety, Medical Information.
* Bachelor in Health Science field
* Coursework needs to have included physiologic sciences
* Degree obtained from Accredited Program
* 4+ years field Liaison experience
* 7+ years experience in the pharmaceutical industry and/or relevant clinical experience
* Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead and develop direct reports through direct experience or related skills
* Able to demonstrate managerial courage in the face of conflict
* High degree of proficiency in managing multiple projects simultaneously
* Understand and effectively communicate scientific information
* Effective oral communication, written communication, presentation, and coaching skills
* Able to manage a frequent travel schedule with 40-60% overnight travel
* Demonstrated advanced computer skills [MS Office and Windows] and willing to learn new applications
* Demonstrated ability to manage department resources
* Demonstrated strong business acumen
* Advanced scientific degree
* Demonstrated high degree of strategic thinking and decision making
* Demonstrated high level of scientific expertise/competency in therapeutic area of responsibility
* Previous experience in managing individual contributors
